Online Assignment: Autobiographical Poems

Hopefully, by the time you are viewing this page, the snow will have subsided in New York City, or you will be some place warm, feeling the sun on your skin and enjoying a cool (non-alcoholic) beverage. In the least, I hope that you take this time to recharge and celebrate the community building and work that we have done far.

So far, we mostly have focused on building our receptive language skill of reading literature, and our written responses have been limited to non-fiction prose. Now, we are going to shift things a bit. As an introduction to our poetry unit, we will practice our expressive language skill of writing by crafting original poems about ourselves.

Before 9:15am on Monday, April 9th, you must complete the following:

  1. Complete the exercises in the Poetry Workbook (pp. 128-129). These are in your course packet and posted electronically on Blackboard.
  2. After completing the exercises, type up your two original poems and save them as Word documents. Depending on your level of interest and motivation, choose which level to complete:
    • BASIC LEVEL: This was enough creative thinking and typing for me. My poems are fine with no further revisions. I’m done.
    • CHALLENGE LEVEL: I looooove writing poetry and other types of literature. I am going to build on my responses from the exercises and add some pizazz! I may even throw in some more “goodies” for my readers to devour.
  3. Post your completed poems together as ONE COMMENT underneath this post.

Between 9:15 am and 10:15am, during our regular class hours, complete the following:

  1. Comment on at least two other posts from your classmates. What text-to-self, text-to-world, or text-to-text connections did you make? What literary devices do you think are particularly effective? Be specific, and be encouraging. Each of your comments on a classmate’s poems should be 5-7 sentences.

Note: Although this is an online assignment, I will be present in our normal classroom if anyone needs assistance with technology or would like to speak with me for any other reason. In addition, I will be holding my normal office hours after class. Send me an email if you would like to meet during office hours, or if you would like to schedule for another time. Don’t be shy!

  • Poem 1: Autobiography Poem
Welcome to my life of hopes and dreams.
In my world all you see is happiness, joy, laughter and screams which is stretch out for miles.
In my world, the style is elegant. People wear everything from suits with ties to dresses with heels. These styles are lovely and gracious.
As for me, I’m like a more casual individual, dressed with sneakers and socks.
My personality is like a book, so just don’t judge me by the cover.
My main purpose in life is to accomplish my goals and make jubilant memories.
It is as eating cream as it taste good on your tongue as you savor the moment.
When I achieve my goals I feel like an eagle soaring through the air with no worries and stress.
I want to share my world with friends and family.
Because in my life I feel that life is too short to waste it, you only have one lap to run; I might as well show everyone what I am capable of before my race ends.
If there were three words to sum up my life, they’d be: struggles, situations and opportunities.
    Welcome.
    Mark Sookdeo

    Poem 2: Similes and Metaphors
My street is like a mall.
The neighborhood reminds me of a market place in Guyana.
After being at school all day long my house feels like spa.
It smells as sweet as scented candles.
    My bedroom is my sanctuary.
It is where assignments get done and dreams begin.
I close my haggard eyes, and peace and harmony is what I see.
My mind is a fascinating piece of art.
My heartbeat sounds like conga drums.
Car horns echoed outside my window like music in a club.
Children play blissfully and run like the wind until it is time for dinner. The food smells like chicken curry with extra curry power.
    My nose becomes a tracker.
My belly is stuffed like a turkey for thanksgiving.
I am satisfied as a little kid eating candy.
When dinner is finished it is time for washing the dishes and doing homework.
It is as easy as shelling peas and when I am finish I feel like a rock star.
This when I like to unwind because when I don’t I am as restless as a wild beast in a cage.

    • I can spot a common thread between both the poems you have written. In both poems you expressed your sense of style, by choosing words such as elegant, suits, ties, and heels. I can infer that perhaps you mostly express yourself through your clothing choices. One stanza that particularly struck me was the first line in poem two “My street is like a mall.” I’ve never really looked at a street in that way. The houses being different retail stores, and you, the shopper, experiencing each ‘store’ as you walk by them on your way home. Each home carrying its own personality. The way stores are adjacent to one another in a mall, homes are racked one against the other in a similar fashion, each home quite different from the next, yet together creating a sense of unity in the neighborhood; quite a clever use of a simile.

    • Hey mark! :I really like your Autobiography Poem. I let me see about you and how you see the things. Those three words that sum up your life are relative to me too because of the struggle that many people do when they go through hard situation, but one never realized that those struggled moments were actually opportunities and a way to grow up as a person. Good job 🙂

    • Hi mark I really enjoyed your use of words such as jubilant and elegant I feel they are words that are underused is the English language. Your poems made me feel very relaxed after I read them. I get the sense that you’re have a very positive look one life. In the line “If you only have one lap to run, you might as well show them what your capable of.” This line made me feel like you really make the most out of life and has inspired me to want to do the same. THank you fro sharing.

    • Hi, I’ am Jingsong. I have read you poem. From you poem, “In my world all you see is happiness, joy, laughter”, I can see you are a happy person, and your life is filled happiness and love. Moreover, in the metaphors, “My street is like a mall”, the images you chose show me you are also a creative person. It will help you a lot in your study journey. Hope you can achieve you goals.

    • I personally liked your poems. It seems to me that you like being around people who are close to you, such as your family and friends because life is too short to waste but to enjoy each and every moment we get before its too late. also, that you like make choices without thinking what other people would say, which I think is great.

  • Autobiographical poem – Welcome to my life of wonders. In my world all you see is food, video games, bible reading, and music for miles. In my world, the style is edgy. People wear everything from sweats, leggings to Jeans. The styles are hipster. As for me I’m like Punk Rock. My personalilty is very goofy and energetic. My main purpose in live is to be a blessing to others. It is as hard as college work. When i achieve my goals I feel extremely awesome/proud of myself. I wanna share my world with someone I love because in my life I feel great. I have amazing, loving and supportive family that cares for me deeply. If there were three word to sum up my life would be stressful, funny and determined

Similes and Metaphors- My wortman is like a classroom with a few students. The neighbor reminds me of quiet town. After being at school all day long my house feels like relaxing spa. It smells like Vanilla as the spray. My bedroom is my happy place. It is where my naps begin. I close my door, eyes and plane ticket is what I see. My dreams is to travel around the world like birds every winter. My mind is a race car. My heartbeat sounds like a siren. Car horns happen outside my window every once in a while. Children play loudly and run like dogs until its time for dinner. The food smells like a sweet home cooked meal. My nose becomes anxious for food. My belly is full. I am satisfied as a bird who got a bunch of worms to eat for its babies. When dinner time is finished its time for English homework. It is as tiring as reading and when I’m finished I feel like a hardworking student. This is when I like to finish my work because when I complete it I am as happy as a rabbit who just got carrots.

    • If I had to choose one word to describe both poems, it would be your yearning for freedom. I can sense through your writing style the need to freely express yourself as an individual. The words you chose to describe your surroundings were ‘wonders, dreams, travel, birds, race cars.’ All these terms are symbols of freedom. You are eager for discovery, and even thrive off of it. In line 4 you write “My dreams is to travel the world like birds.” This expresses your need to experience new things and escape your comfort zone. Doing so allows you to unravel traits about yourself, and breaks you from the walls of restrictions that your comfort has built around you.

    • I like your poem I can relate to eating a lot and playing video games and listening to music for miles. Your poem speaks out to me and can help me relate to my life about how I also am. I like how you describe your personality. Also how you feel because it shows your true colors how you really are. I like you describe yourself to animals like happy as a bird with worms. Your poem is very good thank you for sharing

  • Poem 1: Autobiography Poem
Welcome to my life of curiosity
In my world all you see is questions, answers, and ideas for miles.
In my world, the style is personal choice. People wear everything from all ranges and medias. These styles are nuance. As for me, I’m like a thrift shop. Where old ideas are exchanged for more contemporary pieces. My personality is like the world of physics, the more you read into it the more complex it becomes. My main purpose in life is to get a grasp and make sense of my reality. It is as liberating as a bird flying, with an endless supply of possible destinations. When I achieve my goals I get a sense of my essence, what it truly means to be my most authentic self. I want to share my world with everyone around me. Because in my life I feel that being able to share my experiences and ideas to better humanity makes it purposeful. If there were three words to sum up my life, they’d be: listen, learn, and create
    Welcome.
    Shay Omar

    Poem 2: Similes and Metaphors
My street is like the milky way.
The neighborhood reminds me of the planets that orbit the sun
After being at school all day long my house feels like a playground for knowledge
It smells as sweet as a new ideas
    My bedroom is my utopia
It is where my ideas are allowed to flourish
I reluctantly close my eyes, and see more questions arising to the surface
My mind is a library for my applied curiosity
My heartbeat sounds like the electromagnetic waves surrounding our universe
Car horns disrupt this virtual reality i’ve created in my mind outside my window similar to the pathway of light particles disrupted in different mediums.
Children play in their imagination and run as if no laws govern their reality until it is time for dinner. The food smells like a nuance aroma. My nose becomes accustomed to the sent.
My belly is perhaps a bit overstuffed.
I am as satisfied as a physicist who has discovered a universal law.
When dinner is finished it is time for expanding my knowledge by engaging in some homework. It is as thrilling as stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
This is when I like to apply all that I have learned into my life because when I do I become one step closer to the person I dream to become. I am as empowered as an entrepreneur attempting to view situations in a new frame of reference.

    • Hi Shay, your poems gives a sense that you are a very adventurous person and you enjoy learning new stuff. You also care for the people and surroundings, which is an amazing feature. I say this because in the first line of your poem you mentioned “Welcome to my life of curiosity” and the second to last sentence in the first poem you said “Because in my life I feel that being able to share my experiences and ideas to better humanity makes it purposeful. I also can see that you love to do poetry because of the words you used in you second poem. Words such as milky-way, utopia, empowered and flourish . Your poems shows that you are very intrigued in physics because of the descriptions in your second poem. For instance, “My heartbeat sounds like the electromagnetic waves surrounding the universe” and “Car horns disrupt this virtual reality I’ve created in my mind outside my window similar to the pathway of light particles disrupted in different mediums”. Well constructed and very interesting poems!

    • Shay I really loved your poems. I admire how confident you are in yourself. I as well want to make sense of my reality and share my ideas but it’s not always easy for me. I too want to be able to increase my knowledge so i’m able to be just as purposeful as you are. What makes you think that your street is a milky way though? But over all wonderful Job

    • Hey Shay! After reading your poems I realized that you are a person who likes to learn everyday and answer all the questions you have in mind. About your Biography Poem I loved that define your live: “listen, learn and create”. This is something that inspired me because sometimes I used to do the opposite. You have made a good job! 🙂

    • Your poems are amazing they express how you feel about certain things. They also describe how these things make you you feel. I can relate to some of these things which is funny but interesting and the same time. I like when u say my mind is a library it catches my attention. I like how you also describe how you like to try new things and that you aren’t afraid of that. I also liked how you described everything with detail keep it up

    • Hi, I’m Jingsong. I have read your poem already. Your poem brings me positive energy. In the first poem, “In my world all you see is questions, answers, and ideas for miles”, I can see you are a hard-working and curious person. That will make you get further and further in your college live. I need learn this quality from you. In you second poem, connecting the first one, “my house feels like a playground for knowledge”, the world for you like a secret, you keep studying it and to know about it.

    • It seems to me that you are a curious person, who like exploring new ideas, learning new things, meeting new people, and experiencing new things. As you mentioned in your second stanza as listener, learner and creator. also that you are interested in physics and discovery of universal law.
you like being surrounded by different people so that you can learn about different things in different cultures.

  • Patricia Lullo

    Poem 1

Welcome to my life of not fitting in.
In my world all you see is weddings, husbands, showers and babies for miles.
People where everything from whites dresses to diaper bags.
    The styles are housewife chic.

As for me, I’m like “Oh wow! A picture of your baby sleeping! Amazing!”
My personality is slightly against the expected.
Where Mom and Pop and baby makes three.
My main purpose is independent of societal norms.
It can be lonely as people can be.
But when I achieve my goals I feel that people will finally see me.

I just want to share my world with like minded people and all the puppies.
Because in my life I feel I have loved people for their choices,
But none have loved me for mine.
If there were there words to sum up my life, they’d be alone, happy and free.

    Poem 2

My col-de-sac is like a parking lot.
My neighborhood like a poor mans leave it to beaver.
After being at school all day long my own house feels like a resort you escape to after a bad year.
It smells as sweet as banana muffins.
My bedroom a solitude of chaotic organization.
It is where my thoughts begin.

My dreams scrambled like a puzzle missing pieces.
My mind is a cluster of to do’s and what if’s.
Car horns stay silent outside my window like a mime.
At dinnertime my nose is filled with the aroma du jour.
My belly is growling like a wold on the hunt.
I am as satisfied as a painter finishing his life’s work.
When dinner is finished it is time for all my homework.
It can be as hard as learning Chinese and when I am finished I feel like a feather floating through the air.
This is when I like to Netflix because when I binge watch I am happy as a puppy with a new toy.

    • Hi Patricia, I really enjoyed reading your poems. It gives a sense of who you are and what you experience. I see you have a similar taste of mine when you mentioned “This is when I like to Netflix because when I am binge watch i am happy as a puppy with a new toy”, because that’s one of my remedies of easing stress. After reading your first poem, I felt that you were being left out and not payed enough attention because you stated “Where Mom and Pop and baby makes three” and also “But when I achieve my goals I feel that people will see me”. Your second poem showed that your neighborhood was a very quite place, but yet abandoned and not taken care of due to the fact you mentioned “My neighborhood like a poor mans leave it to a beaver” and “Car horns stay silent outside my window like a mime”. Overall, your poems were well written!

    • Hi Patricia, I loved your use of sarcasm in the first poem’s second stanza. I feel like it really tied in what you said in the first stanza. I also like how your poem followed a thee and the lines complemented one another. In your second poem I identified with the line “My mind is a cluster of to do’s and what if’s.” I think especially as young adults, this is a pressure we are constantly facing. Your simile of feeling like a feather floating through the air created a sense of freedom as I read it. I really enjoyed your poems!

  • Autobiographical Poem
Welcome to my life, it’s not perfect by any means but here it is.
In my world all you see is family, positivity, resilience and unconditional love for miles.
In my world the style is simple. People wear everything from sneakers to flip flops.
    The styles are comfortable.
As for me, I’m like a sunflower growing without the need for water.
My personality is like the sunshine after the rain.
My main purpose in life is to achieve all the goals I’ve set for myself.
It is as planned as it is unprecedented.
When I achieve my goals, I feel motivated because I feel closer to my next goal.
I want to share my world with the people I love.
Because in my life I feel happiest when I know I’m not alone.
If there were three words to sum up my life, they’d be: eccentric, prevail and gratitude.
    Welcome.

    Similes and Metaphors
My block is like a sea of strangers.
The neighborhood reminds me of Brazil in February.
After being at school all day long my house feels like a glass of water at 3am.
It smells as delicious as the food my mama is cooking.
    My bedroom is my sanctuary.
It is where my mind’s shedding of plagiarized opinions begins.
I close my tired eyes and solitude is what I see.
My dreams are eternal like the ocean.
My mind is a gold miner that refuses to stop digging.
My heart beat sounds like the Lana del Rey song playing in the background.
Car horns scream outside my window like the couple that was fighting there earlier.
Children play tag and run like Forrest until it is time for dinner.
The food smells like all the traditions brought to this country.
My nose becomes my favorite sensor.
My belly is awaiting today’s meal.
I am as satisfied as a toddler taking its first steps.
When dinner is finished it is time for English homework.
It is as calming as my book and when I am finished I feel like a calm river.
This is when I like to go to my room because when I am alone I am as free as the wind.

    • I liked both poems. Both poems seems to me full of creative thoughts.
When the writer introduce himself/herself as the sunflower that grew without help of water in autobiographical poem, I liked that part a lot.

  • Poem 1: Autobiographical poem Welcome to my life of a picture worth a thousand words.
In my world all you see is happiness, joy, betrayal
    and lies for miles.
In my world, the style is about me. People wear everything from white to black.
The styles are good and evil.
As for me, I’m like emotionless as gray.
My personality is like a bird trap in its cage.
My main purpose in my life is to find joy and understand myself.
It is as tough as nails.
When I achieve my goals, I feel like I worked so hard.
I want to share my world with everyone
Because in my life I feel like life is a dream, full of many wonders.
If there were three words to sum up my life, they’d be alone, curiosity, and full of hope.
    Welcome.

    Poem 2:
My street is like a city.
The neighborhood reminds me of rush hour in Manhattan.
After being school all day long my house feels like paradise.
It smells as fresh as a garden.
My bedroom is my own private island.
It is where my adventure and ideas begin.
I close my dead-fish eyes, and life full of wonders is all I see.
My dreams are to learn about all questions I have like a philosopher does.
My mind is like a computer connected to a database.
My heartbeat sounds like someone playing the drums.
Car horns echo outside my window like firetruck sirens.
Children play tag and run like cheetahs
Until it is time for dinner. The food smells like home.
My nose becomes like my hungry stomach.
My belly is full like I ate a horse.
I am satisfied as a person who just won a million dollars.
When dinner is finished it is time for tedious homework.
It is as boring as watching paint dry
And when I am finished I feel like an old man.
This is when I like to curl myself into a ball like an armadillo
Because when I sleep I am as a bear
    As he sleeps for hibernation.

    • Victor your poems are awesome. I can completely relate to the tedious homework. What makes you feel like a bird in a cage? Is it because you are shy? I can also relate to your smilie that your belly is full like a horse because I love to eat. Continue be positive and chase your dreams.

    • I like this writer’s both poem. specially the second one poem 2. This writer used a lot of creative words in some points some those lines seems pretty funny. for example the line “my belly is full like I ate a horse”.
This line kind of funny to me and also seems that writer is so creative and can use creative words for the readers.

    • Hi Alexandra, I loved how your first poem shows how diverse you are in the sense that there is no barrier or limit. I identified with what you said in many ways. One example of this was when you said “my personality is like a clown and like a person in the funeral sometimes.” And in your second poem I liked how it all tied together. You created a image of childhood memories and just appreciation for the little things. I enjoyed reading your poems!

I am as satisfied as a traveler who fin water in the desert.
When dinner is finished it is time for conquer homework.
It is as evil dragon as warrior needs to overthrow and when I am finished i feel like a brave man that can do all the things.
This is when I like to go home because when I tired I am as a snail as I can get relax immediately.

    • Jingsong your gave me a sense of how goal oriented you are. I loved the line “my dreams untouchable like clouds in the sky.” I feel this is true for most people but when you finally get there it such a great sense of accomplishment. I enjoyed learning that you wanted to be a doctor it gave me a real sense of who you are. Also, since you speak of your dreams and goal so often it is nice to have a sense of what they are.

    • I really like your poems especially poem 2. The way you place your words makes the reader imagine the scene. It’s makes me feel like I’m their and I’m experiencing when you are writing. I also like that your included Religion in my opinion makes it more personal . Overall I like both poems very detailed and i think they can make anyone see what you are write which I think is great.

  • Poem 1: Born from poor parents
    Came at the wrong time
No money no food no space
    January 28
    She is a miracle
    She brought luck
    She brought love
Noelia the hopes and dreams of Lucy and Efrem.
    Do your best
    Be your best
    If you fail get up
    Bullied by others
    Told she couldn’t
    Believed in false words
Lost her self but no one but HIM could bring her back
    20
    Brought new life
    New year new me
    No more mess
    Because I am bless
    I move forward never stop
Things get harder I get stronger
    I am Lucy and Efrem
    I am their hope
    I am their dreams

    Hustle never ends
But with HIM I can do anything!
