Let me know if you’ll have any issues with the assigned time or if I’ve left you off and you’d like to meet.

Micheal wrote a new post, Kim Gordon's basses, on the site LITERARY LISTENING 1 year, 8 months ago

Just to bring things in the class full circle, I wanted to share a photo from the Met’s Play it Loud exhibit: a pair of basses owned by Kim Gordon, whose memoir, of course, we read excerpts from.

    The […]

Stuart Hall, Black British cultural theorist and “anti-essentialist” thinker

Your in-class final exam asks you to write a short essay (roughly 4-6 paragraphs) discussing how the excerpts from White Teeth […]

Micheal wrote a new post, 'White Teeth' Synposis, on the site LITERARY LISTENING 1 year, 8 months ago

    From 2002 BBC adaptation

White Teeth is the 2000 novel by British writer Zadie Smith. We’ll only have time to read a relatively short excerpt, the second section “Samad: 1984, 1857” (pps. 103-217). I think […]

    Part 1:

Read your passage aloud at least twice.Annotate your paragraph. What literary elements do you see at play in the passage? What words or images don’t you understand? (Look up unfamiliar words or […]

Micheal wrote a new post, note on the "sestina", on the site LITERARY LISTENING 1 year, 10 months ago

I wanted to say a little more about the sestina form, as it appears in When Rap Spoke Straight to God, which I glossed over in class.

The sestina is a complicated form that goes back to 12th century […]

I loved learning about Albanian hip hop, which I wasn’t aware of prior to your presentation in class. Thanks for sharing that. Your experiences with this and other Albanian hip hop artists could be the core of your essay!

Your post is a moving exploration of how this song relates to your experience of moving to a new country, but also in how it continues to provide you a sense of rootedness to Brazil.

You’ve done a difficult thing here, which is to show vividly how a piece with no lyrics makes meaning. The analysis of how the piece works in Your Lie in April is also well done, as you show how it helps to reveal character.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. This is a moving tribute to her. The mixture of emotions you describe alongside this James Taylor song is vivid and poignant.

I too remember these “pop punk” days (I bought Mark Hoppus’ signature Fender bass at the time, which nearly 20 years later I still have). In the essay, “First Date” could serve as a “transition” song: from those […]

I really appreciated the description of how Tiesto corresponded with an opening of broader possibilities. The description of your dad “educating” you on musical forebearers is also nice. Looking forward to reading more.

You do a great job analyzing the ambiguities and ironies present in this song. I especially appreciated your concept of “acknowledging darkness in lightness,” which provides a nice “thesis” of this song’s “message.”
